problem

Modern life is increasingly shaped by constant connectivity, screen dependency and digital overstimulation. As technology becomes more integrated into daily routines, opportunities for stillness, mindfulness and genuine human connection continue to decline. Many people struggle to disconnect from digital devices, contributing to stress, mental fatigue and a growing disconnect from both themselves and others. The challenge was to create a space that encourages visitors to slow down, reconnect with their senses and rediscover the value of meaningful rituals in everyday life.

solution

Rituals Detox Sanctuary is a branded wellness destination developed for Rituals, centred around the concept of “The Return of Rituals”. The project reinterprets traditional wellness practices through a contemporary interior environment designed to promote mindfulness, restoration and human connection. Visitors begin their journey by storing their digital devices upon arrival, creating a fully immersive screen-free experience. Through a sequence of meditation spaces, hydrotherapy facilities, thermal experiences and a communal tea lounge, the sanctuary encourages guests to slow down, reconnect with the present moment and engage in meaningful self-care rituals.

Rituals Detox Sanctuary is a contemporary wellness retreat developed in response to the increasing impact of digital culture on everyday life. Created as a branded project for Rituals, the sanctuary provides a space where visitors can disconnect from technology and reconnect with themselves through ritual, mindfulness and sensory wellbeing.

Inspired by the concept of “The Return of Rituals”, the project explores how interior design can encourage slower living, presence and meaningful human connection in an increasingly fast-paced world. The sanctuary is designed as a complete digital detox experience, offering visitors an opportunity to step away from constant connectivity and engage in restorative practices that promote balance, reflection and wellbeing.

Upon arrival, visitors are invited to store their phones in dedicated lockers, marking the beginning of a completely screen-free journey. The ground floor serves as the introduction to the sanctuary experience, centred around mindfulness, social connection and ritual. To the right of the reception area is a yoga and mindfulness studio, accompanied by a series of breathing and destimulation pods designed to provide moments of quiet reflection and sensory reset. To the left, visitors pass through a Rituals retail space before entering the tea lounge, a social environment inspired by the Rituals of Mehr collection and the importance of gathering through shared rituals.

The tea lounge is organised into a variety of seating experiences, including open communal seating, semi-private conversation areas featuring a sunken conversation pit and S-shaped sofas, and private curved booths that offer a more intimate setting. At the heart of the space is the Harvest Tea Wall, an interactive feature where visitors can select fresh herbs and create their own personalised tea blends, encouraging engagement with natural processes and mindful participation. A central tea bar allows guests to purchase handcrafted teas and light refreshments, creating opportunities for meaningful social interaction in an increasingly disconnected world.

From the arrival space, visitors can descend to the basement level, which has been designed as a decompression experience focused on physical restoration and sensory wellbeing. Upon arrival to this level, guests are welcomed into a secondary reception area before accessing the changing facilities. Once changed, visitors enter the spa hall, a calming and atmospheric environment inspired by the Rituals of Hammam collection. The thermal journey includes a sauna, a fragmented pool arrangement consisting of a main body of water, a hot pool and a cold plunge pool, alongside integrated seating areas that encourage relaxation between experiences. The space is intentionally dimly lit to create a tranquil atmosphere that supports rest, reflection and recovery.

Adjacent to the spa hall is a dedicated resting space featuring heated stone beds, providing visitors with an opportunity to pause and fully absorb the benefits of the thermal experience. Massage treatment rooms are also located on this level, offering personalised wellness treatments that complement the wider sanctuary journey.

The design draws inspiration from the heritage of the existing clay factory building, incorporating clay-based finishes, exposed brickwork and natural materials that celebrate the site's history. Soft curves and circular forms appear throughout the scheme, influenced both by the organic nature of wellness spaces and the cylindrical forms found within Rituals product packaging. Elements of Islamic spatial design also informed the project's approach to circulation, zoning and the creation of calm transitional spaces, encouraging a gradual and mindful journey through the sanctuary.

The project is underpinned by phenomenological and sensory design principles, focusing on how space is experienced through the body and the senses. Materiality, texture, light, sound and temperature have been carefully considered to create immersive environments that encourage visitors to slow down, become present and reconnect with their surroundings. Tactile surfaces, layered fabrics, filtered lighting and the calming presence of water work together to create a rich sensory experience that supports emotional and physical wellbeing.

Biophilic design principles are integrated throughout the sanctuary through extensive planting, natural textures and connections to nature. Sustainable material choices and the incorporation of greenery strengthen the relationship between visitors and the natural environment, supporting restoration, stress reduction and overall wellness.

Rituals Detox Sanctuary demonstrates how commercial wellness environments can move beyond relaxation alone, creating meaningful experiences that encourage reflection, presence and a return to intentional living. By combining digital detox principles, sensory design, biophilic strategies and restorative rituals, the project offers a contemporary sanctuary designed to help people reconnect with themselves, others and the present moment.ng meaningful experiences that encourage reflection, presence and a return to intentional living.
