problem
Accessing clean and pure drinking water is a significant concern in today's fast-paced world. Many individuals face challenges in finding a reliable source of high-quality water. Existing bottled water options often lack transparency in their sourcing methods, leaving consumers uncertain about the purity and origin of the water they consume. Furthermore, the inconvenience of purchasing and transporting heavy water bottles adds an additional burden to individuals seeking a consistent supply of clean drinking water. As retail continues to shift towards online platforms, opportunities for meaningful social interaction within physical brand environments are becoming increasingly limited. At the same time, Carhartt's evolution from a workwear manufacturer into a globally recognised streetwear brand has created a customer base that spans multiple generations and cultural backgrounds. The challenge was to create a branded destination that celebrates Carhartt's heritage while appealing to contemporary audiences, encouraging community engagement and fostering connections between generations through shared experiences.
solution
Carhartt WIP Social Club reimagines the traditional retail environment as a community-focused destination that combines fashion, hospitality and entertainment. Inspired by the contrast between Carhartt's industrial workwear roots and its modern position within street culture, the project creates a space where heritage and contemporary identity coexist. The ground floor provides an immersive retail experience that introduces visitors to the Carhartt brand and its history, while the first floor transforms into a social hub centred around a bar and arcade experience. Together, these spaces create opportunities for interaction, conversation and community building, reinforcing the role of physical environments in bringing people together.

Carhartt WIP Social Club was developed as a branded environment that explores the evolving identity of Carhartt and its ability to connect people through shared experiences. Created in response to a brief focused on experiential retail and human engagement, the project reimagines the traditional retail environment as a destination that encourages social interaction, community and cultural connection.
The concept centres on bringing generations together. As Carhartt has evolved from a workwear manufacturer into a globally recognised streetwear brand, its audience has expanded significantly, attracting both long-standing customers familiar with its industrial heritage and younger generations engaged with contemporary street culture. The project seeks to create a space where these different audiences can coexist and connect through shared experiences.
The design explores the contrast between Carhartt's origins and its current identity. Industrial materials, exposed structures and robust detailing reference the brand's workwear roots, while contemporary interventions reflect its influence within modern urban culture. Rather than treating these identities separately, the project combines them to create a cohesive environment that celebrates both the past and present of the brand.

The ground floor is dedicated to the retail experience, introducing visitors to the history, products and values of Carhartt. The space is designed to feel authentic to the brand, incorporating industrial-inspired materiality and a clear connection to craftsmanship and durability. Product displays are integrated throughout the space to create an immersive shopping experience that reinforces the brand's identity.

The first floor transitions into a hospitality-led environment centred around a bar experience. This social space encourages visitors to spend time within the destination beyond retail alone, creating opportunities for conversation and community engagement. An integrated arcade area introduces an additional layer of interaction and play, providing an activity that can be enjoyed across different age groups and helping to reinforce the project's focus on bringing generations together.
Street culture served as a key design driver throughout the project. The atmosphere, material selections and overall experience were informed by the communities that have embraced Carhartt WIP over time. Community and social engagement became central themes within the design process, influencing both the spatial layout and the programming of the building.
The material palette draws heavily from Carhartt's industrial heritage, incorporating exposed finishes, durable materials and utilitarian detailing that reflect the brand's workwear origins. These robust elements are balanced with warmer hospitality-focused materials to create an environment that feels welcoming while maintaining a strong connection to Carhartt's identity.
Carhartt WIP Social Club demonstrates how branded environments can move beyond traditional retail to create meaningful social destinations. By combining retail, hospitality and entertainment within a single experience, the project celebrates Carhartt's heritage while creating opportunities for connection, interaction and community in a contemporary urban setting.
